Toshio Hosokawa

Toshio Hosokawa is one of the most important Japanese composers. His music combines Asian and European traditions: European subjectivity combined with a Buddhist-influenced understanding of Art as an objective way to knowledge and awareness. On behalf of the Stuttgart Opera, Hosokawa has conceptualized an opera based on Heinrich von Kleist‘s novella The earthquake in Chili: a parable about an unfounded human race which turns the earth into hell whilst at the same time passing on the endangered species.
Marcel Beyer who is narrator, poet, essayist, librettist and both, Kleist-Award winner 2014 and Büchner-Award winner 2016, has written the libretto. With his precise and highly musical language, Beyer explores catastrophic events of European history and follows up their connecting lines into the present.
